SUMMARY:From Script to Screen: Documentary Filmmaking and Distribution Virtual Capacity Building Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Cultural institutions hold incredible stories\, but bringing them to the screen requires a unique partnership. If you have not worked with a filmmaker before\, the process can feel unfamiliar. \nFilmmaker María Gabriela Aldana Enríquez\, director of Art of Solidarity\, will bridge the gap between institutions and filmmakers\, teaching how to commission\, co-create\, and distribute impactful visual stories. \nThis interactive presentation is for cultural workers\, museum specialists\, and forward-thinking organizations ready to dive into visual and cinematic storytelling. Clips of “Echoes from the Key Bridge: A Baltimore Longshoreman\,” an award winning short film produced in partnership with the Baltimore Museum of Industry\, will be shared and serve as a catalyst for conversation. \n  \nAbout María Gabriela Aldana Enríquez \nMaría Gabriela Aldana Enríquez is a Nicaraguan-native and Baltimore-based bilingual artist\, organizer\, educator\, muralist\, oral historian\, and an award-winning filmmaker. Ms. Aldana is the director of Art of Solidarity. Originally from Managua\, Nicaragua\, Ms. Aldana is a proud immigrant with a lifetime of experiences between cultures as a former asylee raised in Miami as a child by her family. She calls Baltimore\, Maryland home where she earned her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2003 and was part of the first group to earn a MA in Community Arts in 2006. She holds K-12 Fine Arts Teacher license in the state of Maryland from Notre Dame\, University of Maryland. \nMs. Aldana has been awarded multiple competitive grants from the National Endowment for the Arts\, Maryland Humanities\, Maryland Traditions\, a program of the Maryland State Arts Council (MSAC)\, Maryland Humanities\, Baltimore Community Foundation\, and MSAC’s Public Arts Across Maryland (PAAM) Planning Grant in 2024 and PAAM Implementation Grant in 2025. She received a Baltimore City Mayor’s Individual Artist Award in 2026. \nMost recently\, Aldana directed\, wrote\, produced\, and edited “Echoes from the Key Bridge: A Baltimore Longshoreman” oral histories and award-winning documentary.

SUMMARY:Archaeology of the Patuxent River: Canoeing through History
DESCRIPTION:Explore the archaeological and cultural history along the Patuxent River with Anne Arundel County’s Cultural Resources Archaeologist\, Drew Webster. Drew will share how archaeological sites inform us about past ways of life from early occupations over 10\,000 years ago to historic times. \nThe Patuxent River is a relatively slow-moving river\, but paddlers must be able to propel the canoe through the water. Participants must be able to: \n1. Independently participate in all activities while maintaining an appropriate and safe body position. \n2. Manage all personal care and personal mobility independently. \n3. Effectively communicate with leaders and other participants. \nFor your safety you are required to have plenty of water (at least 32 oz per person)\, sunscreen\, sun hat\, sunglasses\, lunch/snacks\, and wear closed toe shoes that can get wet & muddy.  If you lack any of these items\, we can deny you participation. Please arrive 15 minutes before the start time. $20 per person. Registration is required and is limited to 14 participants. Ages 13 and older. Under 18 with a parent/guardian. Registration required. DESCRIPTION:Join SERC for a guided tour of the exhibits in the Woodlawn History Center\, as we celebrate the 250th! \nWoodlawn is the oldest building in the Smithsonian and one of its owners had a Revolutionary War connection! General Jonathan Sellman served with George Washington at Valley Forge. Come learn about all of the different groups of people who have lived and worked on what is today SERC’s campus. By walking through the exhibits\, you’ll also learn about how humans have impacted the environment here since the arrival of the European colonists in the 1650s. Discover how a single home exhibits many threads of the American story and has many layers of American history\, right here in Edgewater\, Maryland. \nThe story continues today with SERC science! Come be introduced to the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center and the Smithsonian in your backyard. \nBefore or after your tour\, make a day of it visiting SERC’s walking trails and historic sites (including the Woodlawn History Trail\, where the exhibit expands into the landscape). Enjoy a picnic (please remove all trash and recycling)\, visit the fish and turtle tanks in the Reed Education Center\, launch your kayak from our floating dock or stay for a showing of the American Revolution documentary at 2pm!  **Please sign up separately for the film screening so that we have enough chairs.

DESCRIPTION:This summer\, the Anne Arundel County Executive’s Office will host four River Days festivals at different waterfront locations throughout the county. \n“The goal of these events is to provide public water access and inspire our residents to become stewards who will protect the health of our local waterways\,” said County Executive Pittman. “River Days provide families an opportunity to get out on the water and fall in love with the place that they live.” \nRiver Days Festivals are hosted by the County Executive’s Office. All events are free and open to the public. Each festival will feature fun activities for all ages\, including boat rides\, water activities\, environmental educators\, live music\, games\, crafts\, food trucks\, and more. Boat rides are free\, but capacity is limited and tickets will be available first come\, first served to festival attendees beginning one hour before each scheduled boat ride departure.
